Supermarket Plastics - Campaign for all

When it comes to recycling packaging, 73% of packaging can currently be recycled in England but we only recycle 33%. So what happens to the left over 40%? It either ends up in landfill, or sent across the waters for it to be recycled elsewhere.

With the reduction of plastic bags, Supermarkets ideally need to take the next step in reducing the packaging that is covering our vegetables, fruit, meat and other items.

Many uses for plastic are in products with a relatively short lifespan for example fruit, meat, vegetable packaging through to longer lasting items like childrens toys. In the case of packaging, most packaging has fulfilled it’s first use within 6 months. Though after this, plastic continues to last and takes decades to biodegrade.

Plastic is a valuable and finite resource and environmentally the optimum use for most plastic after its first use, is to be recycled again and again.

The demand for recycled plastic is very strong, both from UK manufacturers and overseas markets. Most plastic that is collected from industrial, commercial or domestic sources is readily sold and manufactured into new products.

Recycled plastic is used to replace virgin plastic or be reused to manufacture products which use recycled plastic as an alternative material.

The Campaign is to encourage people to return their clean plastic containers to where they were purchased from originally. This is to encourage supermarkets to consider using recyclable or better still biodegradable packaging as an alternative.

Talking of alternatives to plastic..... indeed there are! More information will follow.

If you wish to support the campaign please do contact us via email.

Many thanks
