Cheap fashion filling our landfills

Around two million tonnes of unwanted clothing is ending up in UK landfills on a yearly basis.

There has been an increase over the last few years, primarily due to cheaper clothing being readily available. At the same time, fabric used for cheaper clothing is not necessarily recyclable, reusable or takes hundreds of years to break down.

With the London Fashion Week this week, Defra (The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and over 300 High Street retailers, textile manufacturers and designers Around two million tonnes of unwanted clothing is ending up in UK landfills on a yearly basis.

With the London Fashion Week this week, Defra (The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and over 300 High Street retailers, textile manufacturers and designers have signed up to its "sustainable clothing action plan".

The action plan has key areas which it will incorporate - fair trading and child labour being some of the ethical issues. Though it is looking to focus on fashion being more sustainable - from design to manufacture to retail and finally disposal.

The onset of the economy it looked as if Eco, ethically produced and environmentally conscious fashion was to be forgotten. Though all is not lost. With this years London Fashion Week, sustainable clothing lead by the British Fashion Council estethica is showing for the sixth season.

estethica offers a unique chance of like minded companies to come together, network and inspire emerging designers. This season, fifteen new labels are joining for Spring/Summer 2009. With leading Companies like Monsoon and Topshop involved, it enables fledging designers to showcase their work.

Defra Minister, Lord Hunt will also be launching SCAP, Sustainable Clothing Action Plan.

If you cannot wait until the new designers begin to sell their wares, check out two websites which maybe of interest.

Walletpop enables you to swap old clothing and accessories without having to attend any 'swishing' parities.

Covert Candy is a trading site which is similar to Freecycle, though it is dedicated to only Fashion.
