Schools, Local Businesses are Winners, When it Comes to the Crun |
|
In spite of current economic woes, local fundraising group, One World Party (OWP), is hailing its third annual Sixth-Form Charity Quiz a resounding success.
This year, The Piggott School in Wargrave beat the Altwood Allstars by just one point to claim victory, taking home the Waitrose Trophy. Third and fourth-placed teams were the Altwood Alliance and Wye Valley respectively. As well as honing their general knowledge, participants raised money for local charities, benefited the environment and boosted their schools’ budgets all at the same time. Not only were the questions testing, but the organisation of the event posed its own challenges this year, as OWP Treasurer, Mike Peterson, explains, “Some of our large corporate sponsors, who usually donate the top prizes were unable to assist this year, so we were delighted and very relieved when local firms came to the rescue.” Irashai Services and Rocket Gardens collaborated with Energenie to offer two environmental packages designed to save the recipients’ schools money. With energy prices soaring, there has never been a better time to reduce bills and free up money to be spent on core educational activities. Another top prize of a 3-hour motivational workshop was donated by Funshop™. Waitrose’s Maidenhead branch has supported this event from the start by supplying refreshments and prizes and organisers also offered their warm thanks to Maidenhead-based Norden Farm Centre for the Arts and 3, Windsor’s Theatre Royal and O2 of Slough for donating the individual prizes. Chair of One World Party, Ute Wieczorek-King, said, “When times are hard, it would be so easy to give up and do nothing. Sadly, this is what often happens and good causes are the first to suffer. We feel honoured that local businesses have rallied round to help us and that local sixth-formers have, once again, thrown themselves so whole-heartedly into the event.” Proceeds from the night will go to the BBC’s Children in Need and Maidenhead causes; the Bridge Trust’s Re:charge Café and Timbertown. One World Party is a voluntary group of Thames Valley-based businessmen and women who raise money for small charities that work at grassroots level in their communities and are currently at risk from a lack of regular funding.
