A cat lends a paw to help increase passengers
|
A cat is known to bring prosperity in Japan. Yet for the Wakayama Electric Railway, a nine year old tortoise shell coloured feline, born and raised at Kishi Station is now helping the station to help raise the number of passengers.
Tama, was officially appointed stationmaster since January 2007. In April 2006, it saw the Kishi Station become unmanned due to loss, yet Tama stuck around and proved that she was a loyal member of the station. Since March 2007, the number of passengers have rose, up 10 percent from the previous 12 months, according to Wakamaya Electric spokeswoman, Keiko Yamaki. The Wakayama Electric Company feeds her in lieu of salary. Tama was born from a stray cat brought to the station by a cleaner and kept by Toshiko Koyama, a local who runs a grocery store next door. Tama commutes with Toshiko Koyama and tells her "Ms Stationmaster, it's time to work", Tama comes along to the station. In January this year, Tama was promoted to super stationmaster, making her the only female in a managerial position in the Company's 36 strong work force. Keiko Yamaki, joked that "She now holds the fifth highest position in the Company". In recognition of Tama's continual ongoing support she has a new "office". The stationmaster's office, a former ticket booth at the station, opened in April with the attendance of Kinokawa Mayor Shinji Nakamura and the president of Wakayama Electric Mitsunobu Koijima. This office guarantees some privacy. With ongoing press awareness and various popular merchandise, Tama the patient stationmaster is indeed lending her helping paw to Kishi Station. Tama will also be participating in a French documentary film which is being directed by Myriam Tonelotto, about wonder cats from around the world. (AP Photo/Kyodo News) information from AP. |
