Furoshiki |
|||
Furoshiki is a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth that was frequently used to transport clothes or gifts.
It is said that furoshiki's date back as far as the Nara period. Though it is more commonly related to the "bath spread", which derives from the Edo period practice of using furoshiki to bundle clothes while at the sento (public baths). Previous association was known as the hirazutsumi (平包), or flat folded bundle. Though the furoshiki's usage also extended to serve as a means to carry and transport merchants products and decorate a gift. Furoshiki has recently seen a resurgence in being used. This is thanks to the Environmental Minister Koike during 2005 (Mottainai Furoshiki) actively seeing the amount of PET bottles be reused into a more environmentally conscious product - Furoshiki. There are many styles of Furoshiki and they can come in many variety of cloths - silk, chirimen, cotton, rayon, nylon and recycled pet bottles. Traditional designs adorn many furoshiki with scenes from famous woodblock prints, shibori (tye dye), manga characters or simple designs. Furoshiki are great for carrying items (including handbags), wrapping products for gifts or substituting your shopping bag. Sizes are generally 90cm x 90cm for the large carrier bag style. Small sizes are available. Irashai Services is able to source furoshiki (like the one shown above) directly from the manufacturers in Japan. Please enquire if you require individual or wholesale orders.
