UK Government leads within the EU in sustainable procurement? |
|
In 2005, the UK Government set out a strategy (Sustainable Development Strategy) to make UK the leader in the EU in sustainable procurement by 2009.
It was to be recognised as a step towards a more sustainable economy. Though was also to look at the public sector spending on services, works, goods and utilities as the means to stimulate the market for more sustainable goods and services. The other area was looking at the consumption patterns - whether it is consumers or businesses and enabling this to be guided down a sustainable route. Therefore for such steps to be achieveable it was important that a National Action Plan was to be devised through the the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Chief Secretary to the Treasury established a business led Task Force under the chairmanship of Sir Neville Simms. Various key business areas where contacted to be part of the Action Group along with best private sector practice; non-governmental organisations; trade unions; professional bodies; major public sector procurers. The Government were keen to lead by example which includes evaluating standards and ensuring easier procurement steps which may conflict with the vast amount of policies already present. This would enables clearer guidelines. In addition, enable opportunities and remove the hurdles that companies and also staff face. It is hoped that the UK can achieve such a goal. Especially as it is already 2009 and procurement sustainably and traceable aspects is even more needy at these unchartered waters at the moment. |
