What is Sustainable Procurement?

Sustainable purchasing is all about taking environmental and social factors into account in purchasing decisions. It’s about looking at what our products are made of, where they come from, and who has made them. It’s also about looking at whether we need to make the purchase at all.

If we consider all these factors, we can make better choices about what we buy, who we buy it from, and how often we buy it. Ultimately, it is about minimising the environmental and social impacts of the purchases we make.

The UK Government as part of their Sustainable Development Stategy (The Strategy) has committed that UK will be amongst the leaders in sustainable procurement across EU members states by 2009. A Sustainable Task Force has been set up to lead this.

How important is sustainable procurement to you?
  • Do you need a helping hand in sourcing and implementing sustainable (which includes ethically produced, environmentally friendly, looking at your own suppliers and ensuring that they are not posing any environmental risk).
Most businesses are cutting costs when there is a downturn in the economy. Just because these measures are required to keep afloat, don't forget sustainable products and services. A whole life costing approach has demonstrated that more environmentally friendly products can save money. For example, in reducing waste disposal costs especially if the paper company will also collect your recycled paper (Contact Irashai Services Ltd for advice on Companies who do provide this service). Costs can be cut through economies of scale. Also, internal costs can be cut by reducing administrative effort associated with purchasing decisions.

When you are indeed sourcing products and services which are not just sustainable, but also traceable, then your business is not only protecting your reputation, but also building an image. Corporate image is enhanced through sustainable purchasing strategies since they demonstrate to a wide audience including suppliers, customers and the public at large that the organisation is concerned with ALL of the consequences of it's operations and activities.

Organisational objectives when purchasing sustainable products and services can also add value to help stimulate markets for environmentally preferred goods and services. This in particular can be undertaken through joint working and encouraging suppliers to aim for continuous improvement across a range of issues, especially the environment. By undertaking such steps, better quality products can be supplied from better performing suppliers along with a greater buying power.
