With iPod sales shooting skyward and plenty of hype about Podcasting, just how popular is the medium? In reality, there aren’t that many regular podcast users around and it remains very much a niche channel. Even the most popular podcasts have less than 50,000 downloaders. However, this situation looks set to change.
Industry experts predict spending on podcasting will reach around £200 million by 2011 – a steep jump from the current £40 million figure. What will trigger this rise in popularity?
Many advertisers are put off podcasting because of the lack of measureable results, but this is an area where more accuracy is planned according to a report by BusinessWeek. A number of newspaper websites have trialled software which inserts ads into podcast audio feeds. And Google are rumoured to be expanding into podcasting territory in the near future.
So although podcasting is currently a niche proposition, the combination of highly targeted ads and measurable results is expected to increase popularity as a means of building strong brand relationships with consumers.
