LCD Demand Surges Again
Major LCD monitor retailers such as Dell, Philips and Hewlett-Packard (HP) are increasing their 17-inch LCD monitor orders with panel makers, according to Chinese language newspaper, the Commercial Times.

LCD panels have become the favoured technology for much of the audio/visual industry, over other panel types such as plasma screens.

Market publication DigiTimes said that increased orders had been made in order to prepare for back-to-school demand in September.

Sources told the Commercial Times that Dell's 17-inch LCD monitor panels order increased about 40% to 2.7-3 million units in July, an increase from the 1.9-2 million units seen in June.

Most panel makers are shifting capacity to 19-inch and larger LCD monitor panels in the next few months, meaning the supply of smaller 17-inch model will become stretched.

Earlier this year, the production of LCD screens received a huge boost after a group of leading LCD television suppliers announced a £380 million investment.

IPS Alpha, an LCD subsidiary owned by Hitachi, Panasonic and Toshiba, now aims to increase annual production to five million units. Its initial plans demanded an output of 2.5 million units a year.
