World Cup Boosts HDTV Interest
The World Cup has made more consumers in the UK interested in high definition (HD) televisions, according to new research.
Price comparison site uSwitch.com found that retailers have sold a record 364,000 flat panel TVs in the last four weeks, many of which are HD ready.
Chris Williams, digital television product manager at uSwitch.com, said that the task for the audio visual industry now was to educate consumers about the new technology in order to take advantage of increased interest.
"Until now, consumers have only been hearing about the benefits of HDTV from the broadcasters, and much has been made of the ability to watch the World Cup in high definition," he said.
"However, as with all new technologies, the reality is that there is a significant financial commitment involved when it is first launched, which many people don't seem to be aware of."
High definition pictures are four times better than current television output due to the much higher volume of pixels making up the images.
