Sometimes it seems children simply aren’t interested in the foods that are ‘good for you’ although they’re quite happy to gorge on chocolate and biscuits. The good news is that there’s plenty parents can do to improve nutrition and encourage healthy eating habits in their children – from toddlers to teens.
Most dietary surveys conclude that children and teenagers do not eat enough fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy foods, fish, or lean meat. They have also become less active which, coupled with poor diet, can lead to future health risks. In fact teenage diets seem to fare worst of all – unfortunately at a time when growth spurts and puberty demand increased nutrition.
Just a few simple changes to diet can make all the difference.
Healthy snacking
Children will generally eat whatever is available at home which is why it is important to control the supply line. Keep snacks healthy by stocking up on fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grain crackers, and celery. Serve good protein sources like eggs and lean meat and avoid deep-fried foods. Limit fast foods and sugary drinks but don’t rule them out altogether.
Get them involved
Most kids will enjoy getting involved in planning and preparing a meal. In the kitchen, let them help – and don’t forget to praise them for their cooking skills! More importantly, getting your children involved in the process can help them make their own decisions about the type of food they want to eat. The good habits you help create now can lead to a lifetime of healthy choices.
Family meals
Many studies indicate that sitting round the table for a family meal can lead to healthier eating habits. Family meals are a comforting ritual for parents and children.
Children appreciate the regular routine whilst parents enjoy the chance to catch up with their children’s news. Family meals are also a good opportunity to introduce your child to new foods.
