A recent survey of UK businesses suggests the forthcoming smoking ban will have little or no impact on day to day operations. The new restrictions on smoking come into effect on 1st July, but most firms say they don’t anticipate employees taking more breaks to smoke.
In recent years, most UK firms have already tightened up their ‘smoking at work’ policies with many already operating restrictions on the habit. Indeed 87% of organizations already have some kind of anti-smoking policy in place anyway.
The study, conducted by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), suggests the new laws will not be as disruptive as many initially expected. Few firms have had to spend much in order to comply with the rules, and few expect the number of ‘smoke breaks’ to significantly rise.
The survey polled 600 managers, of which just 6% indicated any concerns about disruption to the everyday workflow as a result of the new policies. A spokesperson added: “Despite the considerable attention devoted to the ban on smoking, it appears that many organisations think July 1st will pass with limited significance. Most respondents suggest their employer is already prepared and benefiting from self-imposed restrictions.”
A survey conducted by the Department of Health earlier this year indicated widespread support for smokefree legislation as follows:
• 74% of the overall population support the legislation
• 77% of all businesses are aware of the legislation
• 65% of the population say the legislation will not affect how often they go to the pub
• 15% of the overall population say they will go to the pub more often
• 75% of the overall population believe that going smokefree will have a positive effect on health
