With the ban on smoking in public places less than 100 days away, are businesses prepared for the change in the law? According to Public Health Minister Caroline Flint, 25% of UK businesses were unaware of the ban which takes effect on 1st July. A similar ban was introduced in Wales this week.
The Government is certainly stepping up its campaign as a smoke-free England waits on the horizon. ‘No Smoking’ signs and general guidance leaflets will be sent to businesses in coming weeks, and as the 100 day countdown commenced Ms Flint claimed the new law represented the biggest breakthrough in health protection for a generation.
“The new law will protect everyone from the harm of secondhand smoke at work and in public places, and will save lives” said Ms Flint, “all businesses should start preparing for compliance. They should be removing all smoking rooms and start putting up no smoking signs. We are confident that with the support being provided by the Department of Health and by local councils, everyone should be ready in time.”
Indeed, a recent survey commissioned by the Department of Health indicated widespread support for the smokefree legislation as follows:
• 74% of the overall population support the legislation
• 77% of all businesses are aware of the legislation
• 65% of the population say the legislation will not affect how often they go to the pub
• 15% of the overall population say they will go to the pub more often
• 75% of the overall population believe that going smokefree will have a positive effect on health
