Olympic Torch to Light Up Reading

Rob Wilson, Member of Parliament for Reading East, officially launches his 'Bring the Olympic Torch to Reading Campaign' on Monday 6th November with a visit to the Madejski Academy to meet some of the aspiring young Olympians of the future.

Later in the day Rob is hoping to speak in Parliament on the plans for the route of the Torch and meeting with Olympic officials to discuss the role that Reading could and should play. Rob has already spoken with the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and has been in contact with Lord Coe.

Behind the 'Torch Campaign' is also a serious message; that the Greater Reading area needs to focus its attention on taking an active role in winning Olympic business in addition to providing sportsmen and women to take part.

Rob Wilson is keen to see the Olympic torch brought through areas such as Whitley, Woodley, Earley and Caversham on its route to the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

If successful, the inclusion of Reading and the surrounding areas on the torch relay route will be a historic first for the town, which wasn't included on the route when the Olympics last came to London in 1948.

Rob will be forming a steering committee to bring together business, local authorities, local groups, charities and other interested parties to get involved in the Route, who should carry the Torch and to discuss the many opportunities for the Greater Reading area. Over the coming months Rob will also be touring a number of centres of sporting excellence around his Reading East constituency to highlight to Central Government and the Olympic Committee the area's potential for Olympic investment.
