MP Appeals for Earthquake Kids Fund

On Friday 20th October Reading West MP Martin Salter will be meeting with Reading Mum, Rafina Ashaq, who gave up a good job in the town to work as a volunteer in the regions of Pakistan and Kashmir devastated by last October’s earthquake.

Rafina has helped set up the KYDS (Kashmir Youth Development Services) Foundation which is working with charities and other agencies in the area setting up homes for children in their own communities to avoid them being put into orphanages situated away from friends and family. She has also raised money to install a water pump in the village of Shinkyaari.

Mr Salter, who is a patron of the Reading charity R.I.P.E.R. – Reading Initiative for Pakistan Earthquake Relief said.

“There are still nearly 40,000 people living in temporary camps and shelters in the earthquake zone and thousands of children who have seen one or more of their parents killed. All these people need our help and I feel that the work that Rafina and her colleagues are doing is not only necessary but inspirational. I hope that people in Reading will continue with their generous support and help Rafina and her colleagues make a real difference to people enduring appalling hardship in one of the most impoverished areas on our planet.”
