Council Housing Policy in Disarray

Today, local MP Theresa May launched her own consultation on housing numbers in Maidenhead. Theresa is asking all members of the public for their input on the current housing targets for Maidenhead.

Theresa explained “The Royal Borough has already met its Government housing target for 2010. Last year after lobbying by myself and local residents the Council adopted a housing restraint policy saying they would only allow new development in special circumstances. Now a planning inspector has ruled that he can’t take this into account in making decisions, thus throwing the Council’s policy into disarray.

The inspector told the Council that by “not carrying out any prior external consultation before adopting [policy H5 housing restraint] I can give this policy interpretation little weight when arriving at my decision”.

Over-development in our area has been a constant concern and I have long campaigned against unsustainable development. It is important that we find ways to encourage people to step onto the property ladder. But it’s not just about housing numbers. We need more local say in how many houses we need and where they should be located.

Today I have launched my own consultation on housing numbers. I am asking the people of Maidenhead to take part and provide me with their thoughts on the housing issues in Maidenhead and particularly if you want the Council to exercise more restraint on new development. Please visit my new website at www.tmay.co.uk and select Latest News to log your comments. It’s about time the people of Maidenhead had their say.”
