May Calls Government to Come Clean About Post Offices

Local MP Theresa May last week urged action to safeguard Maidenhead’s remaining post offices and protect vital community facilities. This followed the presentation to the Prime Minister by the National Federation of Sub Post Masters of a petition of 4 million names supporting post offices

Theresa explained “Post offices are often the lifeblood of a community, but their future is under real threat. In the last ten years a quarter of the post office network has closed and more cuts are expected particularly following the Government’s plan to abolish the Post Office Card Account in 2010.

“We’ve already seen too many branches close locally such as in Ross Road, Woodlands Park and Sonning. But Royal Mail bosses say the post office network could be cut to just 4,000 branches. Cuts on that scale could mean that the Maidenhead constituency would lose another 15 post offices.

“I raised this in the House of Commons last Thursday and urged the Government to tell us what they will do to replace the payment card. I want them to think outside the box and for example give post offices greater freedoms to offer commercial products; make more post-offices one-stop-shops for central government services; and encourage local councils to consider ‘council counters’ in local branches.”
