May Welcomes Call for Greater Personal & Civic Responsibility

Theresa May MP for Maidenhead has added her support to Built to Last – a document launched by David Cameron which outlines Conservatives aims and values.

Built to Last is now being sent out to Conservative Party members across the country - who will have the opportunity to vote on the proposals. Its underlying theme is that that individuals, communities and businesses should be helped and encouraged to increase their social, civic and personal responsibility.

Over 50 key policy proposals are outlined in the publication, including pledges of:

  • Abolishing the unelected regional assemblies and returning the powers to local councils.

  • Increasing the level of rehabilitation provided for young people with drug problems.

  • Promoting the role of social enterprises and voluntary sector to tackle deprivation.

  • A national programme for young people as they move from childhood to adult life.

  • A lighter regulatory regime for companies who commit to responsible business practice.

  • Scrapping plans for expensive ID Cards and instead creating a UK-wide border police.

  • Appointing a single minister to be co-ordinate homeland security to fight terrorism.

  • Supporting special schools, to maintain the valuable parental choice which they offer.

  • Encouraging more eco-conscious use of our resources through energy and water conservation and recycling.

  • Ending top-down centralisation of the NHS and give more choice and voice for patients.

  • Supporting families and making high quality childcare more available and affordable.

  • Opposing any proposed European Constitution – which would create an EU super-state.

  • Increasing support for shared ownership schemes to help people onto the housing ladder and giving local people a greater say on where we build new homes.

Theresa May commented,
“I welcome the proposals that David Cameron has announced in Built to Last, including the emphasis on giving local people more control over issues such as development, housing and health; and our commitment to abandoning Labour’s expensive ID card scheme.

“Our country needs a new direction and new answers to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. I particularly support the call for a responsibility revolution – giving individuals across Maidenhead the skills and resources to take control of their life, encouraging Maidenhead’s business to enhance our environment, and giving local neighbourhoods and communities the power to improve our quality of life.”
