Government U-turn

MAY WELCOMES GOVERNMENT U-TURN

Local MP Theresa May welcomes good news for residents in the Maidenhead constituency as the Conservatives force another u-turn from the Government.

The Government has admitted defeat in its battle to remove the movements limit on night flights at Heathrow. Aviation Minister Gillian Merron broke the news in a letter to Conservative Transport Spokesman Chris Grayling, dated 20th July.

In the Civil Aviation Bill, expected to become law in the autumn, the Government suggested removing the limit on the number of flights between 11.30pm and 6am at the country’s three “designated” airports, Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick.

This clause, strongly opposed by Theresa May, residents and local authorities, was twice defeated in the Lords.

The Minister has stated that the Government will not try to reinstate the clause when the Bill returns to the Commons for one last time in the Autumn.

Theresa May said, ‘This is a great victory for local residents. Noise from night flights can be a terrible burden for many people. I am glad that the Government has been prevented from making this situation any worse.’
