Queen's Speech Rehashes Same Old Policy Failures

Rob Wilson, MP for Reading East, today attended the Queen's Speech in the House of Lords. The Government of the day writes the speech for the Queen to deliver to assembled Lords and MPs outlining its programme of Bills for the coming session.

He said: "This is one of the most tired and disappointing Government legislative programme's for at least a decade. There is absolutely nothing new and most of the legislation is aimed at putting right failures of policy caused by this Government. How many times have we heard that "victims will be put at the heart of the criminal justice system", or that "police…will be given new powers to protect the public".

"This is the Government that ruined many people's pensions, yet it is introducing a Bill for "long-term reform." This is the Government that lost control of our borders and now wants to introduce "powers to police our borders". This is the Government that lost control of the management of offenders yet now it is introducing a Bill to "improve" the way offenders are "supervised".

Everything about this Queen's Speech screams failure: failure to plan, failure to manage, failure to deliver. In essence the Government could have done nothing for nine years in many of these areas and we would all have been much better off," Wilson concluded.
