East Berkshire FSB boost morale of small business

Margaret Corridan made the following speech on behalf of small businesses everywhere at this year's Royal Borough Awards 2008.

Madam Mayor, honoured guests , ladies and gentlemen.

I am very pleased to be able to talk to you this evening on behalf of the Federation of Small Businesses, commonly known as the FSB.

I am not going to blind you with too many facts, but there are a few statistics that demonstrate why we feel that it is important for us to be part of these awards and this evening’s recognition of achievement. In case you did not know:

- There are 4.7 million small businesses in the UK, ranging from 1 to 250 employees.

- Small firms employ around 58 percent of the private sector workforce.

- Small firms contribute more than half the UK turnover
And 64 percent of commercial innovations come from small firms.

In addition to this over 500,000 people start their own businesses every year.

It is clear that small businesses significantly contribute to the economy. In all economic climates businesses who progress, perform well and are well managed deserve to be recognised.
These Awards provide just such recognition.

In addition to being a great networking organisation, the FSB’s main function is to provide practical support to its members and lobby government to achieve a change in policy on behalf of its members and all small businesses. You will have seen in the news the FSB has been very active this year in arguing for small-business-friendly tax changes, Keep Trade Local and now in helping small businesses through the Credit Crunch.

While we are busy talking to government, small business owners are striving to improve and grow their businesses.

These Awards:

- recognise achievement of success
- encourage the use of best practice
- give a boost to morale

I am not suggesting that a business award is the only reason to strive for excellence in running your business, but it is a very nice by product and a great PR tool.

On behalf of the East Berkshire branch of the FSB I would like to congratulate all those businesses who have been part of these awards and hope you all enjoy this evening. YOU DESERVE IT

Thank you
