 Paul Mes, Federation of Small Businesses, Membership Consultant for East Berkshire, a branch with over 1,300 members and part of Britain’s’ biggest business support organisation. The FSB’s main role is to champion the rights of small businesses, but members join us to access a range of exclusive benefits. The comprehensive legal and tax protection programme includes unlimited free legal advice and documentation for FSB members and representation in key areas such as employment law. Members are also protected against full investigations by HMRC; purchasing such insurance on the open market would alone, typically cost most members more than their annual FSB subscription. Many businesses join to save money through many services including free business banking, reduced rates for Credit Card Merchant Services or smaller insurance premiums. Typically, our members recover at least the cost of their FSB subscription and often much more. Others join for mutual support with back up from the Federation itself or through connections forged via the FSB online Directory or a programme of local meetings and events. Running a small business requires self reliance but being an FSB member means that you are not on your own as two new members in Cockermouth discovered when their premises were flooded. Not only did they get free employment law advice, the day after they joined, they were also eligible for an interest free loan from the £0.5m FSB Disaster Relief Fund to cover the time until their insurances paid out.
