Work Related Road Safety
Did you know that one third of all traffic incidents involve someone who was driving for business? That’s what government estimates state. If you’re an employer with staff who drive as part of their working day – particularly those who drive for long hours or put in a lot of miles – you need to think about work related road safety legislation. This applies to staff driving cars, vans, lorries, motorbikes, scooters and even pushbikes. Commuting to and from the normal place of work is not covered by risk assessment requirements.
It’s not enough simply to attend to documentation, although keeping an up-to-date check on MOTs, licences and insurance documents is a crucial part of managing the risks of work related driving. Employers need to carry out risk assessments and then decide what needs to be done to reduce the driver’s risk on the road.
Assessments can be done individually, or employers can identify drivers by risk category, allowing them to place the emphasis on, for example, those with higher driving hours and mileage. They may then decide to send drivers for further training (such as Advanced Drivers Training), fleet awareness and other specialist courses.
