Mortgages for first time buyers- where to start?
Congratulations! The day has finally arrived where you’re ready to jump onto the property ladder! You’ve put savings aside, know your property and location and can’t wait to get started. The first question that springs to mind is how does it all work? It’s a good idea to read around a bit and fully understand what’s what. A good place for an unbiased explanation is the DirectGov site. This site provides step by step Q & A’s and doesn’t baffle you with terminology. Or you could try The Motley Fool site. This is a financial site that gives good tips on a large range of topics. Once you’ve understood how things work, you of course need to know who is involved. This is usually: You! Financial Adviser (If desired) Mortgage Lenders Estate Agents Solicitors If choosing your mortgage lender on your own is just too daunting, you could always speak to a financial adviser. They’ll be able to discuss your options and find the best package available. A good place to find an IFA (Independent Financial Adviser) is http://www.unbiased.co.uk/ be warned of the scary eye! Estate Agents, unlike financial advisers, aren’t regulated. It’s usually best to phone around for quotes or get recommendations from friends and family. Don’t just go for the lowest commission. Solicitors are sometimes recommended by the estate agent. This takes away the stress of having to find one yourself, but again it’s always good to get a few quotes. Once you have all of these things taken care of, you can then get on with searching for your dream property!
