How to go green
Residents show neighbours how to go green
Eco friendly homes are being opened to visitors in June and July with help from the South East England Regional Assembly to encourage more residents to go green.
The Assembly is sponsoring the Brighton and Hove's Eco Open Houses event to raise awareness for 'greener living'. Some 14 homes and buildings will be open to the public to show that living in an eco-friendly home does not compromise quality of life yet saves money and the environment.
Cllr Louise Bloom, Assembly Vice Chair and Environment Cabinet Member for Eastleigh Borough Council, helped launch the event:
"I'm pleased that the Assembly is sponsoring this event to help share ideas and good practice across the South East. There is much that others - householders, developers and local authorities - could learn from these homeowners. I have a strong commitment to reducing our impact on the environment and hope this will encourage more people change their behaviour to make a difference."
The South East England Regional Housing Board Chairman Cllr Elizabeth Cartwright added:
"We must have more of these initiatives across the region to help reduce energy and water use in existing and new homes. Our region has a big challenge in raising standards for 3.5 million existing homes that are not built to current eco norms."
The homes show the benefits of super insulation, solar panels, water recycling, biomass boilers, green roofs and walls, and recycled materials. For more information on the event see www.ecoopenhouses.org and for the Assembly's work visit www.southeast-ra.gov.uk.
