Back to School? What’s for Lunch?...
They want to eat chocolate spread sandwiches, crisps, and sweets washed down with loads of fizzy drink. You want them to eat plenty of fresh fruit and veg washed down with natural spring water or possibly some super-healthy yogurt-based drink… How do you compromise?
It’s hard enough battling with the little ones when it comes to homework, bathtime, and bedtime. So it’s no wonder so many parents throw their hands up in despair when it comes to mealtime hassles, eventually giving in to repeated screams for crisps and chocolate rather than persevering with the healthier stuff we know we should be encouraging our offspring to enjoy. But if they won’t even try it, what can you do? Here’s a few lunchbox tips – perfectly timed for ‘back to school’ season…
1. Chicken
It seems even the fussiest child will eat chicken. A simple sandwich of sliced chicken breast with a thin spread of mayonnaise will please most children. Try slipping one of these into the lunchbox and watch out for just crumbs on its return…
2. Carrots
Carrots peeled and finely sliced make a colourful, tasty, and healthy snack. Add a dip such as cream cheese and you’re onto a winner. Try adding celery pieces too if the carrots are a success.
3. Pasta and Noodles
A nice alternative to sandwiches. Instead, send them off to school with a plastic container filled with some noodles or pasta – great energy food that will give them a slow-but-steady release of energy throughout the afternoon. Try experimenting with different sauces – start with a mild tomato sauce with a sprinkle of grated cheese.
4. Fresh Fruit Kebabs
When it comes to pleasing kids, how things look often matters as much as how they taste. A child who won't touch a boring old apple might well eat a fruit kebab with chunks of melon and grapes alternating with mini marshmallows on a wooden skewer.
5. Shapes
You might think we’re venturing slightly into junk food territory here, but if you buy some low-fat deli meats and cheese and slice them into shapes (dinosaur or farm animal for example) most kids will love them. Keep them small and bite-size.
