Donnington Grove Country Club
The Donnington Grove Country Club offers visitors a unique combination of luxury hotel, championship golf course, and fishing in the River Lambourn that runs through the estate.
A delightful mix of parkland, farmland, and woodland, the Donnington Grove Estate on the outskirts of Newbury is overlooked by Donnington Castle. The mansion house on the estate dates to 1763 , which overlooks a beautiful lake, and has been sympathetically updated as a quality hotel. The gothic architecture style is known as Strawberry Hill and the estate was purchased around 1785 by William Brummel, father of Regency dandy Beau Brummel.
The championship golf course, designed by Ryder Cup player Dave Thomas, was opened in 1993. The course was selected for the 2005 Challenge Tour English Open and has PGA approval as an European tour venue. Recently the course has been opened up for visitors, golf breaks and societies. The course itself is one of the finest in the UK, achieving a 4.5 Star rating from ‘Today’s Golfer’.
Running through the estate is the beautiful River Lambourn, an classic example of a perfect trout chalkstream with crystal clear water. Indeed fly-fishing is available to visitors along a half-mile stretch of water. There is also a 5 acre lake stocked with wild trout and situated in front of the house. Anglers are welcome to fish in the lake and the river which has a natural stock of brown trout.
Donnington Grove cater for business functions such as conferences and seminars. They also accommodate celebration events such as birthday parties and weddings. There is an excellent restaurant offering a traditional menu and golfers will soon be enjoying even better facilities when the new clubhouse opens later this year.
