Is Your Website Legal?
You may have heard about recent changes in the law regards displaying UK company information on websites. What exactly do the regulations require you to do and how can you be sure your website is fully compliant? Read on to find out…

Companies must now include certain information on their websites and in their email footers or they will be in breach of the Companies Act and may risk a fine. So it’s worth spending a few minutes reviewing your website and email communications to be sure you comply. The following is the minimum information that must be included on any company's website:

Company name, address, and contact information

The name of the organisation with which the customer is contracting must be given. This might differ from the trading name. Any difference should be explained - e.g. "MiniMoonsailors is a trading name of Moonsail Limited".

It is no longer enough to include a "contact us" form without also providing a working email address as well as the geographical address of the company – and it must be easily accessible on the site. A P.O. Box is not acceptable, but a registered office address is. If the business is a company, the registered office address must also be included.

If you are a company, the company's registration number should be given and, under the Companies Act, the place of registration should be stated ( e.g. John Smith Cars Limited is a company registered in England and Wales with company number 8369875).

Association membership

If the business is a member of a trade or professional association, membership details, including any registration number, should be provided.

VAT registration & prices

If registered for VAT the number should be quoted. Any prices shown on the website must be clear and unambiguous and should state whether inclusive of tax and delivery costs.
