Siesta Can Boost Performance
The idea of an afternoon nap is nothing new – the Spanish have been doing it for centuries. NASA found that a 26-minute sleep sharpened pilots’ performance by some 34%. And now one US firm is positively encouraging its employees to take sleep breaks during the working day.
At Colorado-based Le Gourmet Gift Basket employees frequently start work at 5am to allow for customer time zones. Bosses encourage staff to take 15-20 minute sleep breaks and have even set aside 2 designated sleeping areas for the purpose. Apparently a marked productivity increase has resulted and it seems the ‘sleep break’ phenomenon is set to spread.
Already one London-based company (Arc Worldwide ) has leased 2 ‘sleep pods’ from New York firm MetroNaps. Tiredness takes a serious toll on productivity with an estimated £50 billion a year lost through employees suffering from lack of sleep.
Ironically, as corporate globalisation takes hold, many workers in Spain are having to forego that afternoon snooze.
