London to New York In 2 Hours
London to New York In 2 Hours.
Richard Branson’s pioneering space tourism company ‘Virgin Galactic’ is calling on NASA’s expertise and research facilities in a bid to develop a hypersonic rocket that could feasibly transport passengers from London to New York in around 2 hours.
Virgin’s suborbital spacecraft ‘SpaceShipTwo’, due to commence test flights in 2008, will be used as a training and testing bed for the US space agency in exchange for their help in developing the new super aircraft.
Virgin has ambitious goals, planning to transport its first customers 80 miles above the earth in 2009. Indeed 200 passengers have already paid deposits for their £100,000 tickets. The experience will include 90 seconds of fierce acceleration up to 2500 mph plus the chance to see the earth’s curvature from space.
A NASA spokesman said that SpaceShipTwo would be used to for spacesuit testing and astronaut training. Highly efficient hybrid rocket motors (using solid and liquid fuel) are said to be in development.
