Alternative Investment Market UK
The alternative investment market (AIM) is a young investment market, less than 15 years old.. It is a sub-market to the main London Stock Exchange and was developed so that smaller companies could offer their shares to the public, raising capital in order to promote growth. There are currently 2700 companies listed on AIM. AIM has raised £34 billion of new capital since its launch in 1995.
AIM funds are a greater growth area than the main market: there were 277 initial public offerings on AIM in 2006 but only 54 on the main market. AIM investors are able to meet company management before making an AIM investment; not something a private investor is usually able to do.
