With 99 days left till Christmas Day 2008 you’d better start getting your thinking hat on in regards to what you are going to buy your loved ones.
Me, I’m tired of seeing 50 presents for each child under the tree, 49 of them being plastic crap that is shipped in from China in a box and then the containers are filled up with yesterday’s festivities and shipped back to China in the form of waste that we have no landfill for... as it’s all used up! The boxes remaining here as they prove to be the most exciting part of the present and become trains or space ships that are played with long after the plastic toys have been forgotten... about 15 minutes! What I would like to see is fewer presents under the tree and for those items to be produced locally, by local people using local materials. The trouble is that no-one knows where to find such items. Because they are not advertised on TV or on the middle shelf at Tesco’s they are obviously not available. Hog wash, there are many small businesses trying to make a pound by selling stuff they’ve made, it’s just that people currently want to spend £0.50 rather than £2.50, it is actually false economy. Grandad and I were talking the other day about a local DIY superstore that used to be jolly cheap and is now not so jolly expensive. Grass seed, bought at a local store was £3 as against the superstores £17!!!! Same stuff, different supplier, different year. The bigger chain has seen all the very local businesses go bust and so now has turned its pricing up as the competition is no longer there and the assumption is that they are cheap in the first place. Assumptions change with reality but reputations take much longer to rebuild mr big chain. So we’d like to help local businesses survive in these times of lean pickings. We’d like to encourage local people to buy locally produced items, anticipating they will cost more but understanding that is how the economy works. £1 spent with a local business with go to 6 or 7 different businesses and so becomes £6 or £7. £1 spent with a business that buys everything from abroad means that £1 is going abroad so is only useful once. We need to hear from local businesses that have Ethical Christmas Gifts and we will help those we choose to work with. We obviously need consideration for the work we do and together we will work out how best that is achieved. Please forward this page to those you know may be a good match and let’s help local business thrive and prosper in these times of slim pickings and at the same time, change the expectation of little Jimmy and make him happy to receive fewer gifts at Christmas knowing he is helping other families enjoy their best Christmas!
