WATER MAIN IMPROVEMENT SCHEME
South East Water is to carry out a major improvement programme to further protect drinking water supplies in Wokingham.

The company plans to replace 1,800 metres of old cast iron water mains in Finchampstead Road, Wokingham with a single new, plastic water main.

The improvement work is vital as the current water mains, which are more than 50 years old, are in a poor condition and are increasingly prone to bursts and leaks. This causes disruption to both customer’s drinking water supplies and traffic while emergency repairs are carried out.

Dr Howard Handley, Director of Customer Services, said: “It is vital that we invest and upgrade our water mains network so we can continue to provide our customers with excellent quality drinking water 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

“While we fully appreciate this work will cause short term disruption, we hope all our customers will be assured of the long term benefits this improvement scheme will deliver.

“We are pleased to have worked very closely with Wokingham District Council to achieve this improvement, and look forward to getting the work completed as soon as possible.”

The new water main will be laid, in phases, between Tesco and Evendons Lane. The work is scheduled to start on February 27 and will take approximately four months to complete.

During this time, traffic will be diverted. Routes are being agreed with Wokingham District Council. However, access into Finchampstead Road will be maintained for residents and emergency vehicles.

South East Water has worked closely with Wokingham District Council to minimise disruption and also agree the timing of this vital improvement work, to ensure it does not conflict with other planned improvements in the area.

This close working arrangement has meant Wokingham District Council will also carry out improvements to its own highway drainage system and also road resurfacing work at the same time.

South East Water apologises in advance for any inconvenience caused, and assures customers that it will make every effort to keep disruption to a minimum.
