Wokingham Schools Careers Fair |
The Wokingham Schools Careers Fair was a great success - a fantastic tribute to team working!Students and parents had the opportunity of speaking directly to employers, college leaders, university representatives and apprenticeship providers to ask them directly about routes into employment. Seventy-eight exhibitors took part, with representatives from every skills sector - IT, finance, hospitality, creative and media, construction, science, business, administration and public service. This included some of the most significant employers in the region, like Microsoft, Barclays, Glaxo Smith Kline, Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Thales, Foster Wheeler, BG Group, Ernst & Young and Deloitte, to name just a few. It was a hard day’s work for the employers who were endlessly patient in answering students’ questions but the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. They felt it had been worthwhile for them because they were able to engage with young people directly.
One change from the Fair last year was a series of talks was offered in two seminar rooms throughout the day. Stafford Carrington, ex-Forest student and entrepreneur of the year 2005, was a particularly inspiring when he described how he created his company ‘Impact IT’ in a shed in Reading. The event was very much owned by the teachers, who were extremely diligent in preparing students in careers lessons before they came. They shared teaching resources, lesson plans and student handbooks to ensure all students were able to take advantage of the opportunities available to them. Over 2,500 people attended, 1300 young people came with their teachers during the school day and a similar number of parents and students came to the evening session. It was lovely to see whole families coming to support their children.
We would like to give a big public thank you to Graham Trolley and ITM Audio Visual who provided the power and audio visual equipment for free! The Fair was organised by The Wokingham Federation of Secondary Schools in conjunction with Wokingham Business, Skills and Enterprise Partnership. |
