Arts and Crafts Market Wokingham
|
The Wokingham Arts forum is trialling an exciting new Arts & Crafts market on the 1st Sunday of June, July and August. The result of a brain storming session of the group to help showcase the exceptional talents of local artists and craftspeople it will bring the artisans to the public arena in Market Place, Wokingham.
Tim Byard-Jones, chairman of Wokingham Arts Forum explained “The idea for a cultural equivalent of a farmers' market - where local artists can sell their own work direct to the public - came up in a meeting of the Wokingham Arts Forum, and there was so much enthusiasm we were able to hit the ground running straight away. Events like this show that both the talent and the desire to support local cultural activity is there to be harnessed." One artist who was quick to seize the opportunity to reach a wider audience is Janet Curley Cannon, a Visual Artist from Crowthorne and a founder member of ReOrsa a group of professional artists. She says “It is great that the Cultural Partnership and Arts Forum have put together this Arts & Crafts Market for the summer months. There are very few opportunities for local practising artists to be able to show their work in the Borough, so this may really help to increase the awareness, understanding and appreciation of local contemporary art. It will also offer visitors the chance to talk directly to the artists and hopefully find a unique and interesting work of art to buy for their home or office.” A selection of arts and crafts will be on show and available to purchase over the three Sundays including paintings, prints, cards, handbags, buttons & beads, wall hangings, stained glass art, quilts, Henna art, photographs and jewellery. To complement the artists several musicians will play beautiful music and provide entertainment throughout the day. It has all been possible thanks to the support of the Wokingham Society, the Cultural Partnership and Brian Newman, the Town Centre Manager. The markets will run on the Sundays 1st June, 6th July and 3rd August from 11am - 3pm. Anyone interested in future markets please contact Kate Lole kate.lole@yellow-poppy.co.uk or 0118 978 8801. |
