Wokingham Considers Borough Status Application
Wokingham District Council is considering petitioning the Queen to confer borough status upon the district.
A special council meeting will be held on September 28th, when councillors will be asked to consider whether or not to make a request. Borough status is synonymous with civic pride, tradition and loyalty to the Crown, according to council chairman Angus Ross. "Being granted the status of a 'borough' and thereby having a mayor would bring us into line with the majority of Berkshire unitary authorities," he explained. "It would help us to enhance our corporate image and create a stronger unity across the district whilst also generating greater civic pride and a real identity for the authority." The councillor said that previous council chairmen would have had more opportunity to raise the district's profile if it had been a borough, adding that there was little doubt that boroughs enjoy greater prestige and standing than districts. He continued: "Wokingham District Council is the largest unitary council in Berkshire in terms of population and the district is nationally recognised as one of the best areas of the country in which to live. "The added status of being a borough would help the council to forge better links with business, further strengthening the local economy."
