Chocolate Parties Provide Key to Berkshire Business Success
|
A Berkshire chocolate supplier has turned its business around by concentrating on chocolate parties.
Hurst-based Chocolate for Chocoholics began life as a small company, importing and selling chocolates to retailers throughout Berkshire and the south-west. After a couple of difficult years, Liz and Roger Cossey stumbled on the idea of chocolate parties and have never looked back since. Mr Cossey told the Western Mail that the company had been on the brink of failure before his wife decided to take some chocolates into work one day. "If you put women and chocolate together, you can imagine what happens," he commented. "Sometimes she would sell more to the girls at work than I would sell at the shops." The company's chocolate party business has since gone "bananas", according to Mr Cossey, and now has a turnover that exceeds £6 million. The Cosseys employ 30 permanent staff, as well as 140 self-employed distributors who can earn anything from £5,000 to £20,000 in the ten-week lead up to Christmas alone. Remarkably, the company is still short on distributors in the Reading region, largely because of the perception that spare-time jobs won't pay well. "We have lots of people who want to book parties here but nobody to do them," said Mr Cossey. |
