A Day Out in Windsor

With its world-famous castle, river, and countless other attractions, Windsor is a great place to take the kids for an exciting and fun day out. Let’s take a closer look…

The magnificent castle overlooking the town, the designer shops, the sense of history, and the proximity to the river all serve to give Windsor an unmistakable ‘resort’ atmosphere which makes it a truly exciting place to take the family for a day out.

No visitor to the town should miss seeing the famous castle. Windsor Castle is the largest inhabited castle in the world and the oldest in continuous occupation, with the Queen herself in residence many weekends. Entrance to the grounds is FREE although there is a charge for visiting the state apartments.

Next, why not head down Castle Hill towards the river and Eton Bridge. French Brothers operate 40 minute roundtrip boat tours traveling upstream to Boveney Lock and back – the perfect chance to take in fantastic views of Windsor Castle, Eton College, Mill House, Windsor Racecourse and the Brocas Meadows on the Eton riverbank.

Whether it’s lunchtime or you’re just after an afternoon snack to keep the children’s energy levels up, there are plenty of eateries to choose from in Windsor. Indeed there are countless café’s, restaurants, and fast food places dotted throughout the town.

Whilst in Windsor, take time to stroll around the shops too. The town features an amazingly diverse selection of interesting shops, many of which specialise in selling high-quality UK-made goods. Daniels department store in Peascod Street has a particularly impressive toy department…

DID YOU KNOW?

You can easily tell whether the Queen is in residence when you visit Windsor Castle: look at the flag that’s flying from the battlements. If it’s the Union Jack, she’s not there; if it’s the English Standard (Yellow and blue flag with crest), she’s at home.

Close to the castle you’ll find Market Street. It’s a cobbled street full of quaint shops and it’s the shortest ‘street’ in the UK.

The Guildhall was designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The town council of the time expressed doubt that Wren’s design could support the weight of the ceiling and insisted he build additional supporting pillars in the centre. In order to appease the councillors, Wren added the pillars but to prove his point left them a couple of inches short so they don’t actually ‘support’ anything – take a look when you visit Windsor.
