Reduce Refuse during Christmas
Waste officials are asking the community to reduce the amount of refuse during their festivities with regards to the impact it will have on the environment.
The Royal Borough hopes that people will think about the way they eat, and shop to try and reduce the average three million tonnes of waste that is usually created at this time of year.
What can you do to help reduce the amount of rubbish produced?
Buying recycled products that have a recycled content is just as important as actually recycling. It is vital that markets for recycled products are developed.
Consider which types of packaging can be recycled in your area and try to buy food and drink using that material.
SNUB - Say No to Unwanted Bags! Try to use a reusable shopping bag or reuse plastic bags.
Think about purchasing environmentally friendly gifts or those that are produced in a sustainable way. Support your local charity shop and look for Fair Trade substitutes.
Buy recycled wrapping paper and use string, ribbon or wool for wrapping presents, rather than using sticky tape.
Buy a UK-grown real tree with roots that can be kept in your garden or tub for next year. Artificial trees are a fair substitute as they can be used for many years; however, they are typically made of a variety of different materials, including plastics, and are not easy to recycle.
What can you do with the waste you make?
There are numerous items than can now be recycled including card, foil, plastic, glass, cans, and shoes and clothes. Take these to your local recycling facility, preferably whilst you are already out and about, therefore, saving time and minimising the effect on environmental.
After Christmas see if your local charity shop is taking old Christmas cards and stamps, and pass on any unwanted gifts.
Residents can also recycle their real Christmas trees by taking them to one of many collection points which are open from Friday January 4 to Friday January 18.
