Foot and Mouth confirmation

Council in action after foot and mouth confirmation. Large parts of the Royal Borough are included in protection and surveillance zones set up around a farm near Egham in Surrey where a case of foot and mouth disease has been confirmed this afternoon (Wednesday).

The government has introduced a national animal movement ban with a 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone around the affected farm, both of which include the borough.

The council’s trading standards service has swung into action in support of Defra to ensure that the relevant livestock movement and bio-security controls are in place to prevent a wider spread of the disease.

Working with Surrey County Council, trading standards officers will provide information and advice to farmers, help enforce movement controls imposed by Defra, organise for necessary signs to be erected in the countryside, enforce the closure of pathways if instructed to do so by Defra and ensure that cleansing and disinfection requirements are complied with.

They also have a major role in warning and informing the local community, and farmers are being contacted to make sure they are aware of the restrictions and what they mean for them.

Steve Johnson, trading standards manager, said: “The confirmation is obviously extremely distressing – especially for the farming community. With the aid of our colleagues in Surrey trading standards and Defra we will be working hard over the coming days to ensure that affected farmers have all the help and information they need and that everything that Defra requires to be done, is done.

“If people need further information they should contact either ourselves or Defra and, of course, as the situation changes and develops then we will provide further updates.”

Further information is available from Defra on 08459 335577 or on the Defra website www.defra.gov.uk or from the council’s customer service centre on 01628 683802
