Interested in doing some conservation work in the Windsor and Maidenhead area? Did you know there is an informal, friendly local group committed to conservation in Berkshire…
The Windsor and Maidenhead Conservation Volunteers was founded in 1987/88 and has gone from strength to strength ever since. Although there is a core group of people involved, there are many others who attend the working groups as and when they can. It’s an informal and friendly group with a large variation in ages and experiences - and everyone is welcome.
So if you’re keen to get involved in some local conservation work, even if you can only spare a couple of hours, why not come along and get involved with some worthwhile conservation happening in the Berkshire area?
The Volunteers were founded in 1987/88 in the wake of the great storm which decimated many of Britain's trees. Since then the group has gained a range of experience, from hedge laying and coppicing to bridge building, path construction and 'bashing' (technical term for cutting down) anything which can't run away. They always provide volunteers with the necessary tools (and instructions) to do the job, as well as a background to the task and "why" the particular task needs to be done.
Anyone from ages 16 to 96 can join the group. Members include pensioners and people doing the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. No experience is required and instruction in the use of tools is given on site. Practical conservation work requires a moderate level of fitness, but by no means Olympic standard! Under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
The groups meet at 10 am on work days (normally alternate Sundays) and continue until about 4pm. Volunteers are advised to wear warm, old clothes, a waterproof, and boots or wellies. They should also bring a packed lunch although the group will provide tea, coffee and biscuits.
WMCV sites can be found on the red Ordnance Survey Landranger map 175; the rest can be found on map 176. Socials events are held once a month from around 8.30 pm.
