Free Parking Proposals to Benefit Local Businesses
Residents in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead could soon be enjoying more free parking in the evenings, in a move which would significantly improve prospects for night-time traders.
A report going to the cabinet on September 21st will recommend a number of locations for free evening parking, including York House, Victoria Street, East Berkshire College, King Edward VII, Romney Lock and Windsor Library.
If approved, the sites will join the five car parks which already offer free evening parking in Windsor and Maidenhead from January 1st 2007.
Councillor Antony Wood, lead member for traffic and transport, said that he was thrilled at the prospect of extending free evening parking for residents.
"Phase one of the evening scheme was introduced by my predecessor Councillor John Iles in November 2003 and it has been a resounding success," he commented.
"The council is committed to doing everything possible to support businesses and traders involved in the night-time economy by helping to attract more people into the towns for our excellent entertainment and leisure opportunities.
"The more we can do to attract families into the town centres, the more the businesses will blossom, with the resulting benefit to the borough's overall economy."
