Carry On Windsor

‘Carry-On’ films, love them or hate them, have become a cherished part of British 20th Century culture and many of the original characters have achieved almost iconic status. The films were made at nearby Pinewood Studios, so it’s no surprise to find that Windsor was used as a filming location many times. Let’s take a quick look through the archives…

Although some street scenes from earlier films were certainly shot in Windsor, the first time the town makes a strong appearance is in the classic ‘Carry on Regardless’ from 1961. In the film, Sid James runs an agency called ‘Helping Hands’, with offices based on the corner of Sheet Street and Park Street (the same location was also used in ‘Carry on Loving’ in 1970). There’s a famous scene where Kenneth Williams collects a pet from its owner (expecting it to be a dog) and takes it for a walk round the town. The pet turns out to be a chimpanzee… The owner’s house is in Clarence Road; the ‘walk’ takes place in Alexandra Gardens near the river.

Carry on Cabby from 1963 was shot almost entirely in Windsor: The cabbies frequent a café located just opposite the Royal Oak pub and there are plenty of shots of the Riverside station in evidence. When ‘Glamcabs’ enter the story, there are countless street scenes filmed around the town: look out for Alma Rd, the old Frogmore Hotel, Arthur Rd, Bexley St, St Leonards Rd, St Marks Rd and more. The final ‘chase’ scene was filmed in Windsor Great Park.

1969’s Carry on Up the Jungle was filmed almost entirely at Pinewood. However, the closing scene shows Terry Scott living in a tree house in English suburbia – a scene that was shot in Clarence Crescent.

Like ‘Cabby’, Carry on Loving from 1970 features Windsor in almost every scene. In the film, Sid James and Hattie Jacques run a dating agency (yes, there were such things even way back then…) and arranges a rendezvous for his clients at a bar in the town: actually the cellar bar of the Harte & Garter Hotel. This area of Windsor features heavily in the film, with various scenes shot around the Central station with Charles Hawtrey and Sid James. Sid’s ‘bit on the side’ lives at Rogerham Mansions – actually the Ward Royal flats.

Did you know?....

Kenneth Williams’ one liner “Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!” from Carry on Cleo (1963) was recently voted the funniest one-liner in film history in a Sky Movies poll.
