Celebrities in Windsor

Over the years Windsor and the surrounding area has attracted a number of celebrity residents. The most famous is of course Her Majesty the Queen, but who else is there? Let’s take a look…

It’s impossible to talk about Windsor celebrities without mentioning the Royal Family. First there’s the Queen. When not at Buckingham Palace or Balmoral, she can be found at Windsor Castle, rumoured to be her favourite residence. Local know the Queen is ‘home’ when they see the Royal Standard flag flying (as opposed to the Union Jack). Prince Andrew recently moved into the Queen Mother’s old residence, Royal Lodge, in Windsor Great Park.

Some claim that William Shakespeare lived in the town at the time he wrote The Merry Wives of Windsor, although some historians refute this as most evidence suggests he lived in London prior to retiring to Stratford in 1611.

Elton John has lived in nearby Old Windsor for many years in a property overlooking Windsor Great Park. Famous for his lavish parties and eccentric lifestyle, the musician seems to have settled down since marrying David Furnish in the Windsor Guildhall in December 2005.

Other musicians associated with the town include James Blunt who was a Captain in the Household Cavalry Regiment for many years, based in Windsor. Prior to launching a musical career, he often protected the Queen on horseback - and also the Queen Mother as she lay in state.

Folk musician Donovan lived just outside Windsor for a few years in the late 1960s. Natalie Imbruglia lives in Windsor - on an Island in the Thames. Stephen Triffitt is another local – a former photocopier salesman who went on to play Frank Sinatra in the hit ‘Rat Pack’ show in the West End. Rock guitarist Jimmy Page has lived in Windsor for several years in a mill house that used to belong to actor Michael Caine.

Comedian, impressionist, and singer Freddie Starr was a Windsor resident throughout the 1970s.

Just outside Windsor in nearby Bray we find another list of celebrities: TV presenter Michael Parkinson can often be seen playing cricket or dining at the Waterside Inn. Rolf Harris is another Bray resident, as is Radio and TV personality Terry Wogan.
Heston Blumenthal – restauranteur, owner, and chef in the Fat Duck, also owns the Hinds Head Pub.
