Ricky Gervais gets Golden Globe for Extras

Ricky Gervais has won his 3rd US Golden Globe for “Best TV comedy” Extras. He has already attained 2 for his work on The Office, (one for acting, one for the show itself).

Ricky grew up in Reading's southern suburb of Whitley and went to Reading’s Ashmead School. He later attended the University College London in 1979 to study biology, later switching to philosophy.

Before he became a well-known name in Comedy, Ricky tried his hand in the music industry. He was the lead singer in a New Romantic group, Seona Dancing, a radio DJ, a band manager, and music supervisor.

With the success of The Office, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant went on to write and direct Extras. This was first aired in the UK in July 2005 and boasted an all-star cast including Ross Kemp, Patrick Stewart, Vinnie Jones, Samuel L Jackson, Ben Stiller, Kate Winslet, David Bowie, and Robert De Niro.

Reading’s Gervais lost out on the Golden Globe for “Best TV Comedy Actor” for his role in the series, with the award going to David Duchovny for Californication.

The Golden Globe Awards ceremony was reduced from its usual extravagant event to a one-hour press conference as a result of a strike by US film and TV writers.
