Reading to help relieve traffic congestion
To help relive traffic congestion, a privately built railway station will be erected in Reading. Once open it will cover the Madejski Stadium, nearby homes and south Reading office park.
The plans for GreenPark Station, due to open at the end of 2008, were passed by Reading Borough Council planners and now need to be approved by West Berkshire Council. Depending on demand, trains will initially operate from the new station to Reading and Basingstoke every half an hour. The station will also include a bus interchange, park and ride service and taxi rank. Additional services will run on match days. The park’s system of cycleways and footpaths will also be integrated with Reading’s wider network to offer cross-town routes for cyclists and pedestrians. PRUPIM who are responsible for managing GreenPark’s property assets, has direct control of the development. It already has many facilities including a modern Health & Fitness Club, a Day Nursery and an 11 acre lake. Phase III is still being planned and will take into account a further 1million sq ft of business and leisure accommodation. www.businessinberkshire.co.uk
