107FM Reading Inner Distribution Road Survey
Local radio station 107FM are conducting a survey at www.reading107fm.com regarding proposals to change the Inner Distribution Road (IDR) to a one-way system. Over 90% of people in the area believe there should be a public enquiry before the proposed changes go ahead.
Proposals to better manage the IDR as an anti-clockwise one-way traffic route have been drawn up by the borough council in a bid to keep Reading's traffic moving. According the the borough website, “extensive studies have been carried out with findings showing that the scheme will enable the management of traffic in a better, more environmentally and cost effective way. By altering the traffic movements on the IDR traffic lights would stay green for longer and this would ensure vehicles keep moving.”
However, locals believe the opposite to be the case. The proposed change will actually reduce the number of lanes from 4 to 3, increase average distance to destination, increase travel times, and increase pollution. The council recently decided to go ahead with the scheme without a public inquiry. The 107FM survey aims to highlight the level of public resistance to the plan.
The Statutory Consultation process was carried out between 23 February 2006 and 31 March 2006 and this involved formally advertising the traffic orders for the one-way scheme.
