Save our local pub the Jolly Anglers
|

Email just in from Reading East MP Rob Wilson announcing he’ll be at the Jolly Anglers pub in Reading at 7:30pm this evening, Thursday 9th July 2009, to discuss with local residents any action that can be taken to save the local boozer.
According to Get Reading the Jolly Anglers was owned by Enterprise Inns who have sold the pub to the new owners who I guess can apply for planning permission and do what they choose with the property. Local Green Party campaigner Rob White has set up a Jolly Anglers Face Book community which now has 139 members... The news of this pub closing is not limited to Reading. The Jolly Anglers looks out on the canal in Reading and so this news isn’t just a local story, it is spreading around the river boat community and to others around the world who have enjoyed its atmosphere. Zulu Warrior has taken a couple of snaps of the pub on the 17th June, when open for business and 19th with the doors closed and well and truly barred! One of the Face Book administrators based in France! This isn’t just a local campaign it’s a European campaign... perhaps the local MEPs should join in... they could travel in by longboat and submit receipts for 1st Class travel to enjoy a pint or two!! Locally, the Reading Forum has some dialogue to help the campaign. And more from local blogger Reading List. My thoughts (Jon Davey) on the matter: This shows us just how important it is for local people and businesses to support other local businesses. Failure to do so will ensure that those that own the properties will sell the businesses and re-invest their capital as best fits their business plans. That is business and you are entitled to do with it what you please with YOUR money. And that is the point! Bitching about things afterwards will bring some of the community together for a while until their own personal issues come back to the fore and they are forced to give up the fight. Best thing you can do for your community is use the local services and ensure their survival. As you set aside your mortgage, set aside an amount of money per month you can afford to spend locally and make sure you do. This will ensure local businesses thrive and you have a happy community. Check out the Regional Economic Multiplier Effect which I bang on about all the time when someone in the outsourcing world knocks on my door. Such a shame that many businesses choose the low cost route to suit their current needs and don't reflect on the long term effect of their actions. Please reflect on this and think local before it is all too late and some bloke in China decides to call in your mortgage or not! I'd suggest, if any of the campaigners are reading this, they should contact Paul Bidwell. He is a man who knows about Health and Safety issues, rules and regs, he will be able to see things less emotionally and more rule based that could perhaps smooth the way. He's also in popular demand to run as an MP for Bracknell! Rob’s Press Release Rob Wilson MP will be at the Jolly Anglers pub this evening to meet with concerned residents about the pub’s closure and sale. Representatives from the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) will also be present. Local media are invited to attend, a press release will be sent following the event. WHAT: Jolly Anglers closure – Rob Wilson meets concerned residents. WHERE: Jolly Anglers, Kennetside, Newtown WHEN: 7:30pm, Thursday 9th July |
