Report on Reading's Corporate Assessment Published

A report assessing Reading Borough Council's corporate performance over the past year was published on Tuesday, 13 January 2008.

The Audit Commission's Corporate Assessment of Reading Borough Council is one part of an overall assessment that leads to a Comprehensive Performance Assessment star-rating, due to be published for all local authorities on February 26 this year. Reading has been rated a 3 star council out of a possible 4 stars since the rating system began in 2002.

Among the findings of Audit Commission Inspectors are:

  • Value for money is good and continues to improve despite operating within tight financial constraints and keeping council tax low

  • Recycling and composting performance is praised for being amongst the best nationally. The waste private finance initiative (re3) is securing further improvement and tackling the high cost of waste disposal

  • The high quality of public transport encourages the use of sustainable transport

  • Priority services are improving and Reading is above the national average for improvements to services over the last three years

  • Despite internal change, the Council continues to provide strong and effective leadership through partnership working.

  • Political leadership is effective and well regarded and senior councillors play an active and influential role in championing the needs of the borough in terms of economic development, community safety, and services for older people and children and young people.

  • Reading is a forward-thinking council with a strong understanding of the key challenges facing the town, as well as Berkshire and the surrounding region.

  • The Audit Commission inspectors also acknowledged in their report that weaknesses identified in child protection are being addressed by the Council.
