Reading East MP keeps trade local for his roast of Christmas past

The Reading East MP showed his support for the Federation for Small Businesses’ (FSB) ‘Keep Trade Local’ campaign this week by buying his festive feast from local butcher, Jennings, in Caversham.

Rob is a keen supporter of the FSB and small businesses in his constituency and he regularly shops at his local butcher and other shops. For Christmas this year, Rob opted for the traditional option – the three bird roast.

Multiple-bird roasts were recorded in the Tudor era and the boneless joint was common in Victorian times. People are becoming increasingly more experimental about what they have for their Christmas meals and the traditional options are making a comeback against the American-influenced Turkey.
Rob bought the ‘Gallino’, a pheasant stuffed inside a duck, stuffed inside a turkey – hopefully enough to feed everyone in his household on Christmas day.

Speaking about the ‘Keep Trade Local’ campaign, Rob commented, “I wholeheartedly support the FSB in its efforts to get more people to shop locally. Buying your Christmas roast from your local butcher – whether it’s turkey, goose or a three-bird variety, is a sure way of supporting your local businesses. I encourage everyone in Reading East to use their local shops over Christmas and hope you all have a wonderful Christmas meal!”
FSB National Chairman, John Wright, added, “Each year more than 2,000 small shops are forced to close and in these testing times we fear that number could rise. This Christmas we ask for people to support our small shops on our high streets and in our communities. Buying your Christmas dinner locally puts 50 per cent of what you spend back into the local economy, as opposed to only five per cent spent in supermarkets and chain stores.”
